Common Questions:

Do you offer moving services?

No, sorry we do not but email us and we'll recommend good local piano movers.

Do you offer piano lessons?

No, but we have a list of excellent teachers in the area.   Email us for recommendations!

Why do pianos go out of tune?

Use, temperature, and humidity are the major factors.   Quality, age, and level of care definitely play a role as well.    Although pianos look very strong and solid, the part that makes your piano ring, the spruce soundboard, is very delicate and highly affected by humidity, and with the strings exerting up 20 tons of force, the fineness of a tuning can easily be compromised.  There's a reason that big concert halls need to tune their piano before every single concert!

How long does a tuning take?

Most tunings take about 1 1/2 hours.   If your piano requires a "pitch adjustment" (an extra step needed when the pitch is more than 20 cents away from A440), it will take an extra 30-60 minutes.   In preparation for a tuning, please make sure your piano is clear of any decor or personal items on top or around the front half where the work will be done.

How often should a piano be tuned?

For most people and most pianos, twice a year is enough.    For professionals, and for pianos that are used heavily (schools, churches, universities, etc), it may be necessary to tune it every 2-3 months.

How long does a tuning last?

The goal is to leave the piano with a tuning that will sound great for at least a few months.  But the reality is that pianos are constantly changing through use and climate fluctuations.  Older or poorly maintained pianos are more susceptible to going out of tune.  Frequently played pianos will also naturally drift out of tune quicker than idle ones.

Tips to keep your piano in tune as long as possible:

  • Keep the piano closed when not in use.  Keyboard cover closed, and top down (for grands)

  • Keep it away from windows and exterior walls.

  • Don't allow heat/air vents to blow directly onto the piano.

  • Utilize a whole-house humidifier in the winter.

  • Never bang aggressively on any part of the piano.

  • Leave it in place.  Moving it is dangerous and will disturb the tuning.

What kind of pianos are best for kids?

If your child is interested in learning piano, there are lots of options.   Some parents start their child on an electronic keyboard, but these instruments will not be suitable for them long-term.    Keyboards lack the touch, sound, and even range of a real piano.   On the other end of the spectrum, grand pianos are beautiful to listen to but can be too hard for young children to play on with good technique, and they are quite expensive.   A good quality upright piano is the perfect compromise for playability, sound, space, and budget considerations.   Many used uprights can be found for little cost on online marketplaces.    If you need recommendations for pianos or teachers, reach out to us for more.
